Project Type : Residence Design | Area : 2800 sft | Location : Kizhakambalam | Project Year : 2023

The warmth of a beautiful Kerala home filled with the breeze of neutrals and enveloped in the boldness of architectural details. Gaurishankaram is a warm villa located in Kizhakambalam, Kerala. The exposed brick work with high-end craftsmanship adds all the beauty the palette needs. Our goal was to make the space open as possible, add details to the ones needed and to keep the space neat. The villa has a super inviting patio that opens into a warm living, open dining and kitchen. The ground floor also accommodates a Pooja room, Guest room & Office room along with stairs that leads way to the first floor. The open plan of the house gives an extremely divine vibe. The dining opens into a small sit-out where a traditional Tulasi Madam resides with divinity. We wanted to create more visual transparency from the living and in order to achieve that we made a bold move of puncturing the living room wall to add more character to the space. The TV unit is designed carefully with cute arches to enhance the beauty of the punctured wall. The railings also create patterns with changing natural lights paths throughout the day. A super cosy reading corner in the staircase pocket invites a lot of natural light which brightens up the space as well as one’s mood. Our challenge was to make sure the colour palette was subtle & to make sure the elements we add don’t overdo the space. After carefully understanding what our clients love we added intricate designed doors inspired with the ones from the past. The flooring being the base with neutral grey, some walls exposed as highlight’s and the addition of teak finishes bind the space together beautifully.

To add a visual contrast, we went bold with the kitchen by pairing geometric patterned backsplash tiles with monsoon midnight shade shutters. The service area in the kitchen is secluded with privacy from guest by adding a fluted glass partition which adds a subtle yet functional character to the space. The house is surrounded with neat gardens and access that allows good amount of ventilation and natural lighting to the space. Every bedroom of the house has a well built-in wardrobe, TV unit and Work table made with simple white and teak finishes. The first floor consists of the Music room, Master bedroom, Daughter’s bedroom & Sit-out. The music room welcomes one with its richly carved wooden door. We designed the music room with low level seating replicating our favourite Thinnai (Traditional seating) concept, we also added a tall detailed column to incline it more traditionally. The exposed brick wall of the room acts as the backdrop for a calming brass made Natarajan statue. With coloured glasses in the window, a centre chandelier and all things traditional this space is a melody. The master bedroom opens from the music room space. The master bedroom welcomes a lot of natural light and to utilise this to its maximum potential we kept our walls white, added texture to the wardrobe shutters by incorporating cane mesh, and designed a study corner close to the window. The master bedroom also has a partial walk-in closet with a dresser that leads to spacious and neat bathrooms. Gaurishankaram is a residence with layers of character and warmth. One has to truly experience the space to appreciate it’s details.
